After some tortuous last minute negotiations, UN delegates in Bali have finally agreed to a new road map to cut world carbon emissions.

Frank Field, co-founder of Cool Earth, has written to the Prime Minister suggesting that he acts urgently to give the UK taxpayers a Christmas present by safeguarding huge tracts of rain forest in Guyana.

Cool Earth was created to price deforestation out of the market. Only by making it financially worthwhile to local people and landowners to keep the forests standing, can we protect rainforests sustainably. With the Kyoto Protocol about to come into force, it is time for avoided deforestation to become eligible for carbon credits.

New research has demonstrated that slowing tropical deforestation will play an even bigger role in tackling global warming than previously thought. Without measures to compensate forest nations and communities for protecting a critical carbon store, our chances of stabilising our climate are thin.
