Amazon "is fantastic" says explorer

An explorer aiming to become the first person in the world to walk from the source of the Amazon river to the point where it flows into the Atlantic has spoken of his love for the river and the surrounding rainforest.

Rainforest praised by British explorer

Speaking to ABC News, Ed Stafford said that the Amazon "in all its glory is fantastic" and criticised the modern development which often changes the traditional lifestyle of those who call the rainforest home.

"If you live in an Amazonian town, part of the beauty of it, part of the character of it, is that all of your transport is by boat and I personally don't see the need to cut a big road through the forest," he said.

Mr Stafford said that one of the best aspects of living within the tropical forest is the "aquatic lifestyle" indigenous people can benefit from.

He set off on his Amazon walk mission back in April 2008 and writes a blog detailing his rainforest habitat experience.
