Blue Peter presenter finishes Amazon journey

Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton has completed a challenge for Sports Relief which saw her travel more than 2,000 miles down the Amazon river in a kayak.

Amazon river challenge comes to an end in Brazil

Skelton started the trip nearly six weeks ago in Natua, Peru and has been paddling for ten hours a day, covering some 60 miles. She crossed the finish line at Almerim in Brazil.

The 2,010 mile-long journey saw her break two world records - one for the longest kayak journey by a woman in 24 hours and the longest solo kayak trip ever.

"There were lots of people who told me I couldn't do it. Three of the four experts we consulted before we started said I wouldn't be able to do it. Everyone thought the idea of doing it was laughable," she noted.

Fellow TV presenter Steve Jones, who fronts T4 on Channel 4, is set to head to the Amazon for a Sky documentary about the impact of deforestation on the world's rainforests.
