Brazilian meat firm details rainforest protection idea

A food firm operating in Brazil has pledged not to harm the rainforest with some of its growing operations.

Meat firm says operations rainforest friendly

Speaking during an interview with sector resource Meat Trade News Daily, chief executive officer of Brasil Foods Jose Antonio do Prado Fay said that the firm benefits from being able to work in the animal feed business without harming parts of the precious Amazon rainforest.

"We have raw materials such as corn and soybeans and this can be done without touching the Amazon rainforest area – as we are based in the southern end of Brazil," he explained.

Mr Prado Fay also told the source that he expects the future of the feed and meat industry to be dominated by "strong global companies" based in Brazil.

Large areas of the Amazon rainforest are often cleared for use by companies in the global meat sector, who use the forest to raise cattle or grow feed.
