Conservationists urge abolition of coal plant

Conservationists are calling on the prime minister of Malaysia to scrap controversial plans for a coal-powered energy plant in the country, it has been reported.

According to local news source the Malaysia Star, conservationists from all over the world have written to the leader to urge him to put a stop to the new plant, due to be built in Lahad Dutu.

Speaking to the source, Green SURF spokesperson Cynthia Ong said that in the letters, the group expressed positivity about prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's ongoing commitment to lowering the nation's carbon emissions but also noted that in the past, he himself has spoken out and said that Malaysia has too much of a reliance on coal and gas.

Organisations who have backed calls for the coal plant to be stopped include eco website Monga Bay and the Women's Earth Alliance.

The island nation of Malaysia is one of the most ecologically diverse places on earth with a high percentage of the species on the isle only found there.
