Cool Earth Celebrates the International Year of the Forest
Cool Earth celebrates 2011 as the International Year of Forests. Launched by the UN this week, the rainforest charity will be encouraging everyone to protect an endangered tree.
The idea is to promote world-wide awareness of the importance of forests in everyday life under the banner "Celebrating Forests for People." It encourages initiatives to strengthen sustainable forest management for the benefit of current and future generations.
According to the UN, around 130,000km² of the world's forests are lost due to deforestation every year. Forests also provide habitats to about two-thirds of all species on earth and over 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods. Furthermore, global forest products represent around 270 billion dollars in trade.
