Eco Competition Winners
A Cool Earth's environmental education competition winners - all six students from the bilingual Ashaninka secondary school in the community of Cutivireni - enjoyed their shared first prize of a visit to an ecological demonstration centre. The competition goal was for pupils to design a bill board to communicate an important environmental message from one os these locally relevant categories: rivers, ports, footpaths, school and its surroundings plus village housing areas and their surroundings.
The eco centre visited by the winners is based in a community called San Juan de Chene, close to Satipo, the nearest frontier town which is 8 hours from Cutivireni by canoe and dirt road. They field trip also included meetings with Ashaninka youths studying in higher education in Satipo as well as with Ecoashaninka, the organisation responsible for the management of the Ashaninka Communcal Reserve, which borders much of Cutivireni's rainforest territory.
All participating students submitted at least one drawing with associated text message. There were also six runner-ups who did not participate in the field trip but received small solar or wind up flash-lights or radios for their competition entries.
