Protecting rainforests with Cool Earth Action - Keeping carbon where it belongs

Food industry 'has immense impact on the earth'

The global food industry has a massive impact on the earth, it has been noted, with human food habits contributing to environmental problems and rainforest destruction.

Food industry's impact on rainforests counted

According to an article in the Huffington Post, studies have shown that should humans change some of their food habits - by going vegetarian, for example - then the environment would benefit hugely.

"Of course this wouldn't solve all our problems, but studies show that livestock agriculture produces more greenhouse gas emissions than every train, truck, car and aeroplane put together," the piece noted.

For those who are "die hard meat lovers", simply avoiding eating meat for one day - and viewing the food as more of a luxury item - could help out the planet, it said.

Large areas of endangered rainforests around the world, such as the Amazon, are often cleared to make way for cattle ranches used by the global beef industry.
