Illegally forested wood to be shipped from Madagascar

A huge amount of illegally forested wood, worth some $54 million, is set to be shipped from Madagascar to the rest of the world, it has been reported.

Illegal rosewood to be sent from Madagascar, it is claimed

According to an article on Mongabay.com, the illegally forested rosewood is currently at a port in the north of Madagascar and will soon be sent to countries which could include China, the US as well nations in Europe.

The website cites the information to local sources and said that around 270 containers of wood are currently waiting to be shipped.

"The shipment is expected to escalate the already rampant logging of protected rainforests, especially Masoala National Park, a World Heritage site, since stocks of valuable timber trees have been largely exhausted in unprotected areas," the website noted.

Illegal rainforest logging is one of the biggest threats to the world's tropical forests and is rife despite much legislation designed to prevent it happening.
