Indigenous community takes over oil palm plantation

A Sarawak community in Borneo recently took over an oil palm concession following controversial court ruling. According to the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), this peaceful protest followed the palm oil company IOI's failure to respond to Malaysian court decision made over one year ago.

RAN claim that IOI carried on working its plantation and also broke a commitment not to appeal against the court's decision.

The local Sarawak people of Long Teran Kenan community have reacted by blocking the road and taking over the palm oil plantation. The San Francisco based environmental campaigners - RAN - claim that IOI supplies palm oil to Cargill which is said to be the USA's largest palm oil importer.

RAN have brought this plantation take-over to the world's attention because it believes that Cargill has the potential to exert massive influence within the global palm oil industry. The campaigners want Cargill to adopt essential safeguards to ensure the company human rights are not violated and rainforest destruction minimised.

Palm oil plantations and logging operation have impacted Sarawak's forests since the early 1980's and last year the government announced a plan to expand its oil palm estate by 2.5 million acres over the 10 years.
