Indonesian presidential hopefuls criticised for lack of green policies

Indonesia's presidential candidates have come under fire from environmental groups for not displaying any eco-conscious credentials.

Greenpeace climate campaigner Arif Fiyanto said that none of the main presidential hopefuls have made environmental concerns a priority in their campaigns, reports Agence France Presse.

He also maintained that despite evidence that suggests climate change and deforestation pose a risk to the global community, the candidates have not offered any detailed policy manifestos on carbon emissions.

"Up to now we haven't seen anything concrete from the three pairs of candidates," Mr Fiyanto said.

Forest campaigner Joko Arif added that because environmental issues are not perceived as hugely popular, governments do not devote enough attention to them.

"They're talking about poverty [and] benefits for the community, but if they don't talk about environmental problems it's complete [rubbish]," he said.

Current president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is battling against ex-president Megawati Sukarnoputri and current vice president Jusuf Kalla to win the July 8th election.
