Isolated indigenous people killed in Brazil

Armed with rifles and machine guns, Peruvian paramilitaries are suspected by FUNAI (Brazil's Federal Indigenous Protection Agency) of crossing into Acre, in Brazil's western Amazon region which borders Peru. According to FUNAI, the paramilitary group attacked the isolated communities in an organised manner.

Carlos Travassos, of FUNAI, suggests that the paramilitary group might be linked to international trafficking of illegal drugs. He also says, that: "We are worried more than ever about the situation of these isolated indigenous groups. This could represent one of the biggest blows yet seen in the last decades of protecting isolated groups. A catastrophe caused by our society."

According to Travassos, last Saturday afternoon, a group of (Brazilian) Ashaninka arrived at the FUNAI offices to obtain radios, arms and a motorised canoe so that they can protect themselves against any would-be attackers.
