Rainforest protection group praises Indonesian deal

An Indonesian rainforest protection deal has been praised by an eco group.

Rainforest deal a good move for the world's tropical forests

Commenting after the announcement of a new moratorium on forest and peatland clearance by the Indonesian government, Greenplace called the deal "historic" and praised the nation's government.

The deal was made ahead of last week's Norwegian Forest and Climate Conference in Oslo and was revealed at a press conference between president Susilo Bambang and Norwegian leader, prime minister Jens Stoltenberg.

Indonesia's rainforest pledge includes funding for tropical area protection and is designed to lower the rate of deforestation and illegal clearing in the country.

At the Oslo conference, countries including the US and France put forward funding to be used as part of a global framework of action against deforestation around the world.

The conference followed on from the Copenhagen climate change talks held last year, which failed to come up with a global strategy to tackle emissions, mainly over disagreements between developing nations and wealthier countries.
