Scientists find new monkey species

New monkey species discovered in the Brazilian Amazon

A scientific expedition has discovered a new, but still unnamed, species of titi monkey in north-western Mato Grosso, an area of the Amazon which continues to suffer from rapid deforestation to make way for cattle ranches or soy plantations.

The Rainforest Canopy The find was made by a team of twenty-six scientists, hot on the heels of another titi monkey discovered in the Colombian Amazon three years ago. The scientists made the find after visiting four protected areas of rainforest.

The Brazilian Amazon has lost more than 700,00 square kilometers of forest (about 18%) in the last thirty years or so and some scientists suggest that this forest loss could be drying the Amazon, putting it at greater risk of drought and fire.
