Scientists launch real-time atmosphere research mission

A scientific research project to measure the globe's CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases in real-time began on January 7th.

Earth's atmosphere

The advanced Hiaper research aircraft will travel more than 24,000 miles over the next three years, sampling the atmosphere in different regions of the world.

An international team of scientists will undertake the landmark project, which is the first attempt at making real-time observations.

The aircraft will embark on a total of five flights in the space of three years, taking samples of greenhouse gases at different altitudes in some of the most inaccessible regions of the world.

Led by Harvard University, it is hoped that the mission will produce data that will correlate with climate change and global warming models, such as those estimating the impact of deforestation in endangered rainforests.

All climate research information to date has been gathered via satellites, balloon launches or using sophisticated computer models.
