After some tortuous last minute negotiations, UN delegates in Bali have finally agreed to a new road map to cut world carbon emissions. A surprise u-turn by the US meant agreement was possible and the Bali ‘action plan' paves the way for two years of negotiations over emissions targets to replace those in the Kyoto protocol which expires in 2012.
Although the Bali agreement did not include any binding targets it does refer to ‘deep cuts in global emissions' being required to halt climate change. In this sense it is being touted as a real breakthrough. Most important is that consensus was reached on the principle of paying rainforest nations to protect their standing forests, as a practical way to prevent further deforestation.
As Cool Earth supporter, Sir Nicholas Stern has said, reducing emissions from deforestation is the most immediate and cost effective way of avoiding catastrophic climate change.
Cool Earth welcomes the recent developments on the international stage but recognises that the world can't wait for politicians and Governments to get their act in order. Cool Earth was created to price deforestation out of the market and is already acting, with help from individuals and organisations, to pay local communities to prevent forest loss.
