Prince Charles calls for action to save rainforests

25/10/2007

The Prince of Wales has called for urgent action to prevent the loss of the world's remaining rain forests.  Speaking at a dinner at Hampton Court Palace he announced the creation of the Prince's Rainforest Project, which, over the next 18 months, will be studying ways to combat rainforest destruction.

The Prince correctly identified the key problem with the current situation; that trees are worth more dead than alive.  Cool Earth believes that the only way we are going to prevent further destruction is if we put a true value on standing rainforests, which recognises the environmental services they provide.  Only then can local communities have a real choice not to work with logging companies.

Cool Earth director, Matthew Owen, has already had initial meetings with the project team and is looking forward to further involvement.
