Rainforest destruction 1 of 9 tipping points to climate chaos

25/01/2008

rainforest_destruction_100 Nine ways in which the earth could be tipped into irreversible climate chaos have been listed by scientists.  And the disappearance of the Amazon rainforest is chief among them.

Scientists have warned that current average temperature rises, resulting from man made greenhouse gas emission, are likely to lead to sudden and dangerous changes in some of the worlds most important geophysical systems.

As temperatures rise and deforestation continues the rain system supporting the Amazon may collapse, the report says.

A recent report by WWF said that more than half of the Amazon rainforest could be lost by 2030.
