Help us protect our rainforest, says President of Guyana

24/11/2007

In a radical move, the President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, has offered to place the whole of his country's rainforest under the control of a British-led coalition, in return for development aid.  The deal would be the first of its kind and would represent a breakthrough in thinking not just on how we approach climate change and the problem of deforestation, but also international aid.

guyanaGuyana is a former British colony and sits just between Venezuela and Brazil.  It is home to a tranche of pristine rainforest the size of England.

Cool Earth fully supports a bilateral approach, especially in the absence of any international agreements which include forest protection, and we will be pushing the Government to take the President up on his offer to protect this critical environmental resource.

Working with local partners, Cool Earth is helping to secure this corridor of land by investing in its protection system and in local community development that values forest conservation above forest destruction.
