Climate change secretary visits Amazon groups

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband has met with indigenous Amazonian groups to engage in talks aimed at finding a solution to deforestation.

The minister spoke with members of Brazil's Xingu ethnic group in the remote Pavuru community, telling them that an agreement on climate change at the upcoming summit in Copenhagen this winter will only be possible if Brazil is included in negotiations.

He acknowledged the work that has already been done to stop deforestation in the Amazon but said more still has to be done to fight global warming and preserve endangered rainforests.

Community members told Mr Miliband that their way of life is being increasingly threatened by corporate incursions into their native lands.

As part of his five-day visit to South America, Mr Miliband will meet a number of scientists, environmentalists and policy makers in the region to determine the true extent of deforestation and its effects on the local environment.

According to Tree4Life, Brazil's Atlantic Forest has been reduced to less than five per cent of its original size due to logging.
