Deforestation puts local rainforests groups in "crucible"

A rainforest conservation organisation has spoken out against the deforestation of rainforests in Brazil, which is putting local indigenous groups in a "crucible".

The Amazon Fund stressed that deforestation is contributing to the destruction of local ecosystems and forces native groups to comply with this decimation in order to survive.

Writing in Mongabay, the organisation pointed out that many rainforest populations find themselves forced to take part in the logging of trees and destruction of local ecosystems just to make a meagre living.

"Many of their opportunities for supporting themselves and their families financially involve logging or other large-scale operations that deplete and ultimately decimate the forests," commented Emily Taylor and Paul F Torrence, of the Amazon Fund.

They suggested that there needs to be a "two-pronged" solution which promotes sustainable activities as well as encourages rainforest and wildlife conservation.

In related news, the US Forest Services recently gave two timber companies the go-ahead to cut down up to 381 acres of Alaska's rainforest, sparking criticism that this could worsen deforestation in North America.
