Gordon Brown announces increase in eco jobs by 2017

The prime minister Gordon Brown has announced plans to significantly increase the number of environmentally-friendly jobs over the next eight years.

In a statement released last week, he said that some 400,000 jobs will be green by 2017, amid efforts to fight global warming, reports the Guardian.

Mr Brown also said that £150 million in public funds will be devoted to attracting private sector investment in low carbon technologies, life sciences and biotechnology.

It is hoped that the new initiatives will help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere and complement current rainforest conservation schemes.

A number of proposals were also made, including a commitment to build four carbon capture and storage demonstration plants and 1,000 onshore and offshore wind turbines between now and 2010.

According to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation, deforestation accounts for around a quarter (25 per cent) of all man-made carbon dioxide emissions.
