Leicester scientists explore deforestation

Leicester scientists will explore the issue of deforestation at a major international conference next month.

Between September 8th and 11th the University of Leicester will host the event on behalf of the UK's Remote Sensing and Photogrammetric Society, considering the role of photographs in helping protect the environment.

Dr Kevin Tansey of the department of geography said: "I'm sure most people are familiar with Google Earth.

"This conference is about extending the utility of the images like those within Google Earth, extracting real information from the images and interpreting the information about features in the image remotely."

As well as deforestation, scientists will consider how to map wooded areas, detect carbon from space and monitor natural hazards.

Earlier this month satellite images revealed the extent to which the Congo rainforest depleted.

Britain's satellite spacecraft UK-DMC2, which was launched with Deimos-1 on a Dnepr rocket from Kazakhstan last month, made the revelations, reports the BBC.ADNFCR-2073-ID-19316350-ADNFCR
