School kids 'help conserve Colombian rainforests'

Schoolchildren in Cumbria, north-west England, are playing their own small part in rainforest conservation by helping to sustain regions in South America.

The youngsters, from Newbarns Primary School, have donated almost £100 to the South Lakes Wild Animal Park in order to buy a portion of rainforest in Santa Catalina, Colombia, reports the North West Evening Mail.

In order to come up with the necessary funds, the year four pupils appealed to fellow students at the school in Barrow to solicit 50p donations as part of Dalton Zoo's appeal.

The donations soon accumulated, and with 50p buying a square metre of rainforest, the amount raised is sufficient to purchase 196 square metres, which helps to secure the region from illegal loggers.

Newbarns Primary School's youngsters have not stopped there - they plan to continue with their fundraising and buy 960 acres of rainforest in Colombia.

Speaking to the Inter Press Service, meteorologist Max Henriquez has previously stated that 312,000 hectares of forests in Colombia have been "invaded" by the agricultural sector over the last 20 years.
