Cool Earth Action - Keeping carbon where it belongs

Birmingham International Airport

bia2Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has joined forces with Cool Earth and is protecting 170 acres of endangered rainforest in our projects, locking up nearly 44,000 tonnes of CO2; the equivalent used by the Airport's buildings over two years. The protected area holds some of the world's richest stores of forest carbon and is right at the frontier of destruction.

The area is also home to around 3,700 mature trees, 16,000 saplings, 22 endangered species, 322 types of plant and over 11,000 species of insect and worm.

"We're proud of this joint partnership and hope it continues to grow from strength to strength."

John Morris, the Airport's Head of Corporate and Community Affairs

black-river Amazonas As well as protecting critically endangered forest, BIA's partnership with Cool Earth is bringing benefits to the local Birmingham community by working with Small Heath School to raise awareness among its pupils about the Amazon and its importance to the climate and indigenous communities.

The sponsorship also includes purchasing classroom equipment, solar powered internet, and working alongside the Ashaninka people of Peru in their work to preserve a unique and critical ecosystem.
