Cool Earth Action - Keeping carbon where it belongs

Boyne Resorts

Rainforest is disappearing fast and together with Cool Earth, Boyne Resorts aims to save hundreds of acres of endangered rainforest and protect our future.

As one of Cool Earth's leading partners, Boyne Resorts is among North America's largest operators of ski and golf resorts.  The partnership with Cool Earth is helping to supercharge its carbon responsibility as part of its policy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions across all resort locations in the United States. For every ton of CO2 generated by a Boyne Resorts lodge, lift and vehicle, two tons of equivalent emissions are prevented by investment in rainforest protection.

"In addition to countless efforts to reduce our energy usage and promote responsible stewardship of over 30,000 acres of North America's most pristine and beautiful mountain regions, Boyne Resorts is proud to become the first resort company to offset its carbon footprint through partnership with Cool Earth and commitment to the protection of the most productive carbon sequestering forests on the planet."

John Kircher, president of Boyne Resorts' western operations

Boyne Resorts' commitment to protecting 141 acres of endangered rainforest is enough to cover twice their carbon emission (based on the company's current resort portfolio) over a one-year period.  The pledge made by Boyne Resorts to rainforest protection is already impacting the lives of those in local communities and the security of trees in the Ashaninka, Peru.

"Our organization and its more than 7,000 team members working throughout North America hope this step ignites others in the resort industry to do the same, as this commitment is far more effective and with return far outweighing and outlasting initiatives such as wind credit purchase in our cooperative effort to help solve problems with carbon emission."

Stephen Kircher, president of Boyne Resorts' eastern operations

Every acre of mature rainforest that Boyne Resorts secures keeps 260 tons of carbon dioxide where it belongs. This means that Boyne Resorts' contribution is protecting countless mature trees, saplings, endangered species of mammal, types of plant and species of insect and worm.  Its partner support of Cool Earth also includes the purchase of classroom supplies, solar powered internet service, and working alongside the people of Ashaninka to ensure they are properly compensated for protecting a unique and irreplaceable ecosystem.

Overall, the project that Boyne Resorts supports will protect almost eight million tons of CO2 - equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of a city the size of Cincinnati.

By investing in local processing of forest produce, Cool Earth is working with local communities to ensure they earn a better income from living trees than cleared land.  Income from adding value to Brazilian nuts and Açai berries ensures that the custodian role played by local people is underpinned by sustainable jobs.
