Fundraising for Schools
Cool Earth have had some fantastic support from schools across the world who have raised funds for schools in our rainforest projects. You can learn more about how The Laude Lady Elizabeth School on the Costa Blanca in Spain has supported us here.
The Laude Lady Elizabeth School is a British international school on the Costa Blanca in Spain. All the pupils in the school belong to one of four houses, and each house supports a different charity. About 2 years ago Green House decided to support Cool Earth.
The decision was made for a number of reasons. The students feel strongly about environmental matters, perhaps more so than their parents' generation. They wanted to support an international charity which is working on a global scale. While the other charities supported by the school (such as the Red Cross and a cancer charity) do good work to support people in need, we felt that Cool Earth is looking more to the future, and the future belongs to today's children. We were impressed by the simplicity and directness of Cool Earth's aims, and by the fact that almost all of the money we raise goes directly to the projects in the rainforest, which we can monitor via the website. It is great to know that protecting the rainforest also supports indigenous tribes and maintains biodiversity.
Fundraising goes on throughout the school year and has included raffles, cake sales, sponsored walks, fancy-dress football matches, non-uniform days and lunchtime discos, a talent contest and whole-school Christmas fair. This has allowed us to donate 900 euros to Cool Earth this year alone, and in total the school has protected 21 and a half acres of rainforest.
The students in Green House also work hard to raise environmental awareness and to 'green' the school. Pupils have devised and presented Earth Day assemblies, instituted a classroom paper recycling scheme, put plants in every classroom and taken part in tree-planting days. Recently, all pupils were invited to take part in a competition to devise a logo for Green House to portray its environmental aims and links with Cool Earth (see picture of the winning entry).
All these activities mean that the name Cool Earth, and its aims, are known to the whole school community here on the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
