Ovo Energy
Ovo energy customers are helping to be guardians of the Amazon rainforest in what's believed to be, the biggest single CO2 saving act per customer by a UK energy company.
Ovo Energy has teamed up with Cool Earth to protect an acre of rainforest in the name of each and everyone of their customers. So far they're keeping a staggering 18 million tonnes of CO2 where it should be. This radical green initiative is promised as part of every Ovo customers' contract when they sign up to one of Ovo's two simple tariffs. Sign up to the Ovo tariff here
The innovative partnership has been praised by one of the UK's most respected scientist Professor James Lovelock who says: "It's great to see an energy company taking a global approach to climate change."
Ovo's managing director, Stephen Fitzpatrick believes the partnership with Cool Earth is the most cost effective way to prevent CO2 emissions and preserve on the the planet's most valuable resources;
"As an energy supplier, we really had to think about our effect on the planet, so what Ovo is doing in partnership with Cool Earth, is harnessing the power of our customers and using it to make the most significant positive impact on our environment that we could find possible. Will our customers approve of their rainforest acre? We think so."
And so does the first Ovo customer to receive their acre;
Maria Guest, from Southampton; "We're so pleased we switched to Ovo. It's great to know we're not only saving money but that we're doing something really practical to help save the environment too. I think most of us want to be greener but we don't get around to it because it usually costs so much more."
The partnership between Cool Earth and Ovo sees customers protecting over 70,000 acres of rainforest. This is an area larger than the size of Manchester and saving around the same amount in CO2 emissions as fitting nearly every household in Britain with solar panels.
Cool Earth's director, Matthew Owen says Ovo is placing its customers right at the heart of rainforest protection;
"Backing up affordable energy in the UK with a huge commitment to protecting rainforest means every single Ovo customer is helping in the fight against climate change."
HOW DOES THE OVO & COOL EARTH PARTNERSHIP WORK?
Each customer receives a personalised certificate and details of the acres Ovo customers are protecting. Typically each acre contains around 44 mature trees, 6 endangered species and 11,000 species of insect and worm. In phase 2 of the initiative customers will be able to check their online energy bill then take a tour of their rainforest plot via Google Maps.
