International Year of Forests 2011
International Year of the Forests 2011 was declared by the United Nations to promote awareness of the vital role our forests play in our everyday life and to encourage sustainable land management practices.
Celebrating Forests for People
Forests are home to 300 million people all around the world many of whom play a key role in Cool Earth's rainforest conservation models. Our projects are community led putting the people who live in the forest at the heart of keeping it standing.
According to the UN 130,000km² of the world's forests are lost due to deforestation every year despite the facts that over 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihoods.
The scale of deforestation is so huge that more CO2 is emitted annually through trees being cut down than the entire global transport sector.
Through out this year Cool Earth will be bringing you the individual stories of the people who live in the rainforest and what we can do to help them keep trees standing.
