Mother of five Chabuca Bustamante, from Cool Earth’s Ashaninka partnership, tells us that the spirit of the forest, as with all living things, is its mother.
When trees are felled, the forest’s mother is upset and can send bad things, such as illnesses. The mother of the soil is unhappy when her trees are taken away.
Chabuca teaches this message to her children, sharing knowledge and respect for the rainforest as it has been shared through the generations. By taking care of the forest, mothers teach their children to protect their natural resources, and in return receive life, energy and peace.
This mother’s day, we’re celebrating the mothers of the forest like Chabuca, who are keeping the spirit of the forest alive and nurturing the community.
