What is Race for Rainforest?

Race For Rainforest is a virtual charity fitness challenge raising money for Cool Earth – helping to back people to protect rainforest and fight the climate crisis.

Taking part is simple. Register on our website, set up a fundraising page on GivePenny, choose your activity and get moving throughout September to help reach a cumulative distance of 6,400km (the length of the Amazon River).

What you choose to do and where you choose to do it is totally up to you. You can pick to run, skate, swim, cycle, walk, skip, scoot…and the list goes on. Anything that clocks up your kilometres. As a virtual fundraising event you can do your distance wherever and whenever you want.

Your fundraising target, if you’d like to receive a limited edition Cool Earth t-shirt, is £150 and a distance of 40km for the month is recommended, but not compulsory – do more if you wish.

When is Race for Rainforest?

Race for Rainforest takes place from 1st to 30th September 2022.

With a target distance of 6,400km you can do as many or little as you can to add to our people-powered total. You will have the option when you sign up to pledge the distance you’d like to have completed by the end of the month, but you can always do more if you wish.

Where is Race for Rainforest?
This is a virtual event, so you can take part whenever and wherever you’d like, whether it’s a daily swim, weekly scoot, monthly marathon, or weekend cycle.

How do I sign up?

Register here, set up your fundraising page, pledge your distance, set your fundraising goal and then get moving in September.

Once you have registered on our website, you will be directed to GivePenny to set up your fundraising page. Here you can set your personal profile up, set your target distance and sponsorship target as well as join a team (if you wish to do so). If you’re on Strava and Spotify, you can also link these to your page. This will be your one stop shop for all things fundraising.

Share your page far and wide and get those donations in. With GivePenny people can choose to give you a one off donation or donate a set amount per km.

Can children take part?

They can indeed. We do ask that anyone under the age of 18 is registered by their parents or guardians, who will need to approve the terms and conditions. We ask that parents or guardians of any fundraisers under the age of 16 be in charge of any money raised if the child is fundraising offline (as recommended by the UK Fundraising Regulator).

Does it cost to take part?

Nope. Run for Rainforest is free, all we ask for is your commitment to saving the planet. We do ask that fundraisers aim to bring in £150 (or more) through sponsorship. Once you make it to that cash goal, we’ll send you a limited edition Cool Earth tee.

Can I change my distance after I’ve registered/started?

Absolutely. We are asking that each fundraiser aims to do a minimum of 40km throughout the month, but there are no restrictions.

Can I choose my own distance or route?

Yes you can. As mentioned before, we’d love it if you could add 40km to our 6,400km target, but you can do as many as you like. With this being a virtual event, you can also choose to do your activity wherever you want, whether it’s on a rowing machine, in the water or up a mountain.

Can I take part as a team?

Absolutely. Once you’ve set up your fundraising page on GivePenny, you’ll have the option to join or set up a team. We’re all about people power, so get as many people as you can involved.

Can I purchase any merch?

We will have Cool Earth t-shirts available on our online shop. But, if you’d like to get one for free, fundraise £150 and we’ll get one in the post to you.

About your fundraising

How much should I fundraise?

We are asking everyone to set a target of £150 and, if you smash this goal, you’ll receive a limited edition Cool Earth t-shirt.

Don’t forget to share your fundraising page with EVERYBODY that you know. Send them the link via email or text, share it on social media, and create posters. Just do what you got to do. If you want to fundraise offline, you can also download a sponsorship form here.

When should I reach my target by?

Reach the £150 target before 1st September 2022 and you’ll get to don your Cool Earth t-shirt throughout your fundraiser. We’d aim to have all donations wrapped up by the end of October. If you need a little longer or any help at all, just get in touch.

About tracking your miles

How can I keep track of the kilometres I’ve covered?

Once you have set up your fundraising page on GivePenny you’ll see that you can add in the distance you’ve covered through their Strava integration or by manually uploading them yourself.

You can download the Strava App to your phone and link it to your fitness and activity tracker.

When can I start clocking my kilometres?

You can start tracking your distances and adding them to your fundraising page from 1st September 2022. This can be done through Strava or manually.

Can I keep adding my activities after September?

You are only able to clock activities you do throughout September 2022.

Can I link my tracking and fitness device?

GivePenny is integrated with Strava, FitBit and RunKeeper. Your tracking device can automatically sync with one of these and update your fundraising page each time you log a distance.

Getting a team together

How do I go about creating a team?

Before you can invite team members to your page, you’ll need to set up your fundraising page as an individual. You can do this by signing up on the charities event page.

Once your page is set up, click on your challenge (either through your dashboard or via your page URL). If you create the Fundraising page you will be the Team Leader and in charge of ‘admin’.

At the top of your page you’ll see a box saying ‘Update Progress’, click here and then click the ‘Update Team members’ Pop in the name and email address of those you want to invite to your team and hit ‘Invite’. You will then see a screen saying ‘Team member added’, click done and you will now see the invite status.

You can add further names by changing the information in the boxes and clicking ‘Invite’ – Make sure the email address is correct!

Already have a fundraising page set up and want to join a team?

Simply log in to your GivePenny account and follow the instructions above. Note:

  • You will be the only person able to invite new team members along.
  • You will be the only person able to edit the fundraising page – but teammates can connect their apps so their updates will automatically be synced. If they wish to do manual updates the Team lead will have to do this.

How will my teammates know I have invited them?

Everyone you invite will get an email to let them know you have invited them, with a link to allow them to set up their GivePenny profile.

Once they have set up their GivePenny profile, they will just need to click the ‘tick’ button to accept your invite and join your team.

Tip: Why not edit your ‘Challenge Name’ on your page to be your team name? This will show everyone who comes to your page that you are a team!

How do I track everyone’s invite status?

Keep an eye on the Team Member table (under Update Progress – Update Team Members) to help you keep track of everyone you have invited to your team. The status column will keep you updated:

Accepted – They’ve accepted your invitation and are a member of your team!
Invite Sent – Your invitation has been sent but not yet responded to.
Rejected – They rejected your invitation.
User Left – They have left the GivePenny platform and deleted their account.
Removed – Either you or themselves removed them from your team. If this was a mistake, don’t worry, you can re-add them.

Can I edit my team page?

When someone is a member of a team they WON’T get their own fundraising page.

Taking part as an organisation

How can we take part?

That’s totally up to you. You can either fly solo or group together as a team. If you do decide to set up as a team, why not set that distance target high or start some friendly competition between different departments.

Can our organisation match fund our fundraising total?
