Oh yes, you read the title right. In January 2019, Jurjen, Jess and Jamie Sjouerman will race over 3000 km across India. Triple J, triple threat - and the glorified lawnmower that is our pimped out rickshaw. We're coming in hot. The event is The Rickshaw Run. The cause is to save the rainforest. And the route? There is none. That's over 3000 km dodging trucks and weaving through Indian back-roads. We're ready. Bring it on, baby. How will this save the rainforest, you may ask? Cool Earth are the official charity of the Adventurists, the organizers of The Rickshaw Run. To put it simply, Cool Earth save rainforests and they do a damn fine job of it. Now saving the rainforest isn’t a new idea. Managing to do it however is. Over the last 40 years, half the world’s rainforests have been destroyed. That’s why Cool Earth decided to go about things differently. They don’t create reserves or put up fences. They don’t buy land. Instead, they put indigenous people back in control of the world’s most endangered rainforest. These people have lived in the forest for countless generations and their homes are now on the frontline of deforestation. By building better incomes, better schools and better clinics, Cool Earth give their partner villages the resources they need to keep their forest intact. Cool Earth is now working alongside 113 rainforest villages throughout the world. These partner villages are protecting over 900,000 acres of forest that lie directly in the path of chainsaws and bulldozers. The clever part is that this forest forms a shield to make the neighbouring forest inaccessible to loggers – saving millions of acres of further forest. The Adventurists had this to say on Cool Earth: “We must save every rainforest in the world so future generations have somewhere to get stuck. Not because we’re tree hugging sandal weavers, but because the world would be shit without them. It’s not just about the carbon, the point is rainforests are indescribably excellent”. It's a pretty concise explanation, and we agree. So while we take care of dodging trucks for 3000 km in a glorified lawnmower, we, Cool Earth and the trees appreciate every share and donation. Our rainforests will thank you.
With our maternal roots in Brazil and the recent election of Bolsonaro - the Brazilian Trump who intends to mow down the Amazon - we feel this cause is more important than ever. Without Mother Earth's lungs, how will we breathe? We're in an era of suicidal crazies governing the planet. Put simply, it's not enough to hope for the best. We need to play our part.
