Championing nutrition

Two years ago, one in five Ashaninka children were malnourished. Food gardens were becoming less productive due to long El Niño seasons, and logging activity upriver had decimated fish numbers. So, the communities asked Cool Earth for advice.

We brought in Edgar Ambrocio, a nutrition expert with more than 25 years’ worth of dedication to agriculture and capacity building. Edgar has been back and forth to every village in the partnership, explaining how to grow new vegetables, raise chickens and bolster the traditional diet of manioc when bush meat and fish are scarce.

Edgar is helping families’ food gardens yield the protein and the vitamins that every child needs to grow, saving children and the rainforest.

Meet Chabuca Bustamante

Cool Earth's nutrition champion

The 32-year-old Tsimi President lives in Cutivireni with her husband and five children.

She would be the first the admit she never enjoyed cooking and her children neither liked, nor ate vegetables if they could help it. With Edgar’s help, the nutrition project has changed all that.

Her children now eat the ‘five a day’, with her fifth child asking for seconds during Cool Earth’s visit in May.

From having little interest or understanding of food to encouraging others to follow her lead in under a year Chabuca has been instrumental in promoting nutrition within the community.
