Rainforest-saving jewellery

A group of super-keen students from The Lady Eleanor Holles School have taken matters into their own hands.

Seeing deforestation's effect on wildlife and wanting to take action, they have decided to get creative.

By making jewellery, they are not only recycling and reusing old beads, but raising money for Cool Earth in the process. With their sale coming up soon, we can’t wait to see how well they sell. Thanks to all who have got involved so far – you’re keeping trees standing and animals with a home.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO RAISE MONEY FOR COOL EARTH?

After all the research that I did I felt that cool Earth was the best charity to fundraise for as it really gets everyone involved and the Earth is very vulnerable right now so i thought that supporting an Earth charity would be the best. The rainforest is important to me because I love animals and there are so many wonderful and amazing animals that live there and just seeing such a gorgeous place being cut down is something which I do not want.

HOW DO YOU MAKE THE NECKLACES?

We have hand made these necklaces using recycled string and we have reused beads from broken necklaces.

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE GETTING INVOLVED?

There are 4 of us making the necklaces but we plan to sell them to many more people at school and in our town.

HOW MUCH ARE YOU HOPING TO FUNDRAISE?

We are hoping to make £50-£100 by the end of next week as we are planing on selling them at our charity fair next Wednesday, in the meantime we are making the necklaces.

HOW ARE YOU GETTING OTHERS TO JOIN IN WITH YOUR FUNDRAISING?

We are going to sell them at our charity fair and we have started to make a poster about why we are selling them and why we want to help save the rainforests and we have already had a few pre-orders meaning that we are sure to make some money.
