New data: forest fires caused 50% of forest loss in 2024

Fuelled by fire, forest loss accelerated to a record-breaking 6.7 million hectares in 2024, data confirms.

That’s almost double the amount of forest loss in 2023. And, it’s the first time on record that fire has overtaken agriculture as the leading cause of deforestation.

These are not the kind of records we want to be breaking in 2025.

The Solution?

Experts have called for stronger fire prevention and increased funding for Indigenous-led initiatives.

That’s exactly what we are doing.

We know that stopping fires starts with arming rainforest communities with knowledge and resources they need to protect their lives and land.

Fire Prevention in the Amazon

With your support and our NGO partners Central Asháninka of the Ene River (CARE) who work on the ground in the Amazon, we’re already implementing the solutions.

Together, we’re already taking action to stop fires. Nearly 300 community fire monitors were trained last year, thanks to your support. This helped to protect more than 242,000 hectares of critical rainforest.

As a result, our partners in the Amazon who participated in fire prevention and fighting training saw a reduction of 96% in fire-related forest loss compared to the previous year.

Now, it’s time to prepare for the 2025 fire season ahead, and we need to train more communities.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your support.
