Rainforest Labs

Rainforest Labs

The latest forest monitoring technology.

We put technology and data into the hands of people living in some of the most remote rainforests in the world.

From wifi and computers, to GPS trackers and a fully kitted out headquarters, our Rainforest Labs are equipping Indigenous peoples with the tools they need.

Technology is becoming essential to Indigenous peoples ways of life, and most importantly as a method to monitor their forests for threats like wildfires and illegal logging.

Matt Proctor

“Since satellites have been available to the public they’ve mainly been used by academics, then NGOs, then governments. The people that actually live in rainforest have been excluded from the knowledge. No one has shown communities how to download, process and use data like academics, NGOs and governments use it: to further agendas.”

Forest monitoring in action

We’ve helped build Rainforest Labs in the Amazon and the New Guinea rainforest, equipping Indigenous peoples with the tools they need to monitor their territories.

Rainforest Labs in Peru

With over 100 forest loss alerts in the communities in Peru already, Rainforest Labs are vital.

We also support forest monitoring efforts in the Peruvian Amazon with the PAAMARI programme and Indigenous communities.

Those who live on the frontline of the climate crisis often have little access to data and technology.

Most of us use a smartphone and rely on Google Maps and wifi in our daily lives. But, not everyone has access to the data we take for granted.

Without it, how can Indigenous peoples be informed of encroaching threats to their land? How can they hear about a nearby wildfire fast enough?

Our Rainforest Labs exist to change this and are providing rainforest communities with the resources, real-time data and support they need to look after their territories.
