Cool Earth and the Commonwealth

Cool Earth’s partnerships with indigenous villages have proved that community led conservation works in Peru, The Congo, and Papua New Guinea. A new initiative launched today will replicate that model in tropical rainforest across the Commonwealth.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy is a coherent and vibrant network of forest conservation initiatives throughout the 53 nations of the Commonwealth. It demonstrates the capacity of the Commonwealth to act together and to benefit from shared knowledge and experience.

And Cool Earth is immensely proud to be leading the project.

Commonwealth citizens are leading the world in efforts to protect the forest – forest that their communities and the planet as a whole depend on.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy will show that, irrespective of geography, economy, culture or tenure, solutions exist to the threats facing these most critical of ecosystems.

Cool Earth and the Commonwealth
Why do we need the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy?

One fifth of the world’s forests are in Commonwealth countries.

The 53 members of the Commonwealth are all working individually to preserve forest and indigenous plants and trees in their own countries. By celebrating their efforts together we can share best practice, highlight the value of saving forests and the impact on climate change, use existing relationships to create new, collaborative conservation initiatives, and employ the power of a major coordinated initiative to access international funding for forest protection.

Cool Earth is pioneering this project alongside The Royal Commonwealth Society, a network of individuals and organisations committed to improving the lives and prospects of Commonwealth citizens across the world, and The Commonwealth Forestry Association, which links foresters, scientists, students and policy-makers throughout the Commonwealth to seek ways of wise forest management.
