Rare eagle in Cool Earth’s Asháninka Partnership

Part of the monitoring and evaluation of Cool Earth’s partnerships involves setting camera traps and monitoring biodiversity in the forest. The richer the biodiversity and the higher the range of species, the healthier the forest.

The monitoring is carried out by community members who know the forest like the back of their hand. Combined with camera trap technology, we can get a great picture of life in the forest.

We have had some incredible finds, but we were particularly excited when Jaime from our Asháninka partnership sent in some footage of this Ornate Hawk-eagle.

Noted for its vivid colours, the birds have a wingspan of up to one and a half meters and weigh 1.5kilos. They are powerful predators and can take prey up to five times their own weight.

These beautiful raptors are listed as near-threatened on the IUCN red list, so it’s great to find them in our Asháninka partnership.
