Cool Earth’s Asháninka Partnership receives a Gold award

We are in celebration mode today after receiving a Gold award at last night's Global Good Awards

The Global Good Awards, founded in 2015, celebrate what organisations of all sizes are doing in their communities, for their people, for the planet and for their bottom line.

Cool Earth’s Asháninka partnership won gold in the International Sustainable Community category.

The judges said, “this approach is game-changing, allowing rainforest protection to become a sustainable component of empowered, healthy communities.”

Of all Cool Earth’s partnerships across Peru, DR Congo and Papua New Guinea, our most established is with the Asháninka in Peru, where we’ve been working since 2008. Funds are transferred directly to a freely elected Community Association, who decide on and implement projects according to community needs. The support focuses on improvements in livelihoods and access to services with the aim that forest protection becomes a sustainable component of empowered, healthy communities.

From our first village partner of Cutivireni, we’re now working with 18 Asháninka villages in Peru’s Ene Valley. This valley is one of the world’s most at-risk rainforest areas, with illegal logging and coca destroying the forest. The partnership covers approximately 166,000 acres of forested land.

Investment is decided and implemented by the communities themselves – Cool Earth acts as a facilitator of change.

This award recognises the success of this partnership, which has allowed us to replicate our model across the globe. The award is a testament to the hard work of our community partners, and to the belief and backing of our generous supporters. Thank you.
